After looking at these data I suspect that Laura Belle Owens/Myers was born out of wedlock on 11 May 1885. The birthdate within the posted obit is in error. It reads 1895, it should read 1885. My apologies for the error.

In the 1900 census, Cherryhill Twp., Indiana Co., PA, p.182
family #2/2
Hannah Mentch, head, June 1831, 68, Wd
Robert Bickle, boarder, July 1835, 72, Wd
Laura Myers, boarder, May 1885, 15, servant

Thomas Owens and Ida Myers took out a marriage license in July 1887, two years after Laura was born. Laura may have never taken the Owens name and she is not mentioned in either Thomas or Ida's obits.

She is called Laura Belle (Owens) Henry is her obit and Laura Belle (Myers) Henry in her husband's obit dated 29 Mar 1948. Her husband's obit dated 30 Mar 1948 does not mention Laura.

I checked the FA and B prosecution lists that were posted on the Paindian listing in 2000 for any mention of Ida Myers or Thomas Owens in 1885-1887 but none appear. I do find a prosecution of an S. C. Burkhart by Ada M. Myers in 1882, verdict was guilty, Dec 1882.

This amusing story is also found in the papers.

7 Sep 1897 - Indiana County Gazette - A "FAKED" ASSUAULT - And How It Involved Two Good Men in Trouble

A most sensational story was circulated about town last Saturday. A little daughter of Mrs. Nagel, of Sixth street, drives her mother's cow to pasture on the Bath farm south of town. While on her way home on Saturday morning she saw a man hurrying after her and became frightened. The man was Linn Myers, who works in the brickyards. The child ran home and reported that she had been chased by Myers, and the story of a brutal assault, embellished with the popular vulgarities, was soon circulated.

Myers, when approached on the subject, said that he was going to work and was in a hurry, as it was almost time to start up when he saw the little girl. He acknowledges having spoken to her, but denies any assault. His statement of the case is verified by a number of witnesses.

A funny incident occured in West Indiana on Monday morning, as a result of this story. Thomas Owens, a brother-in-law of Myers, charged William Swauger with having circulated the story. Swauger met Owens in front of Marshall & Kline's store and an encounter ensued, in which Swauger exhibited fistic accomplishments and Owens displayed marked ability as a sprinter. Owens took refuge in McCracken's meat market where the assaults of Swauger were prevented by the gentle butcher, and Officer Pringle, who had arrived on the scene. No arrests have been made.
