Name: Nichlaus Koppenhoffer 1
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1675 in Meckesheim, Baden, Germany
Death: BEF 1736 in probably Germany
Occupation: Gamekeeper
Reference Number: 4321
Note:
Based on a note dated August 24, 1999 from Charles Copenhaver in Dublin, O
hio, Nichlaus was a gameskeeper.

From the book, "The Copenhavers of Northern West Virginia - Their Ancestors and Descendants" by John E. Hildreth, published 1989.

"The Koppenhoffers (Copenhavers) originated mostly in the Alpine area, of Germany, not far from present day Stuttgart. Many were known to have lived in and around Schwabisch, but our ancestor, Johannes Jakob Kopenhoffer (Jacob Copenhaver) came from Meckescheim, Baden, Germany. A great number of Germans had migrated to Holland and England then on to America in the 1700's because of widespread religious unrest in Germany at the time. William Penn recruited many to colonize parts of the New World under his stewartship. Most of the early German immigrants came to Pennsylvania but some went to Virginia then scattered as new areas were opened for settlement.

Since the first Koppenhoffer (Copenhaver) arrived in America in 1728, the Copenhaver name has taken on many spellings showed the original German spelling, Koppenhoffer, became Anglicized by numerous English speaki
ng record keepers. Recorders simply spelled names the way the name sounded to them.

Various branches of the Copenhaver family; Thomas, Wolfgang, Johannes Jakob and others have used different spellings for the name, for example: Koppenhoffer, Koppenheffer, Koppenhaver, Kopenhaver, Coppanheaver, Copenhoven and Copenhaver. Such unusual spellings as Cuppenheffer, Copenheifer and others were also used. Because of these differences, members of family branches often did not realize they were from the same general famil
y. Families even carried forth a different spelled surname, from previous generations, because of a spelling (or misspelling) placed on a land or other important document. The name Copenhaver is used as the common name for all descendants of the immigrant, Johannes Jakob Koppenhoffer.
"Coats of Arms":

Although we presently know of no Coat of Arms for our particular Copenhaver family of Johannes Jakob Koppenhoffer (Jacob Copenhaver) there is a registered Copenhaver Coat of Arms in Heraldry.

The Copenhaver Coat of Arms, the original description of the arms (shield) is as follows:

"GU, a beer barrel PPR, with a bundle of barley at the dexter and a bundle of hops at the sinster PPR.
Coming out of the barrel; three cornflowers AZ, placed two over one."

When translated, the blazon also describes the original colors of the Copenhaver arms as:

"A barrel of barley and hops, all naturally colored, symbolizing a barrel maker and the production of beer
for which Germany is well known, and blue cornflowers, the national flower of Germany. The red background
symbolizes valor and patriotism and blue symolizes loyalty and splendor."

Birth: 27 NOV 1705 in Meckesheim, Baden, Germany

Baptism: AFT 27 NOV 1705 probably baptized in the Monchzell Lutheran KB church, Meckesheim, Baden, Germany

Note:
Johannes Jakob was born in Meckesheim, Bad-Wurttemberg, Germany. Bad-Wurttemberg is located in SE Germany; most people there are Alemanni (relatives of French Alsatians), Franconians, Palatinate people and Swabians; before the Romans, this area included main European trading artery of Rhein and immense hardwood forests, now largely cut; the Alps form the southern border.

About a year after the birth of their first child Friedrich Ludwig, the family set sail for America.

His German name was Jakob Koppenhoffer. He is the first known ancestor to live in America. He and his wife Elizabeth came to America on the ship "Robert and Alice" of Dublin and last from Rotterdam. They arrived at the port of Philadelphia on September 11, 1738. They settled in Earltown, Earl Township, (now New Holland) Lancaster, County, Pennsylvania. The source for this information is the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers: The Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia -1727-1808" , a three volume set authored by Ralph Strassburger & William Hinkle. Some of their descendents moved south near Winchester, Virginia and Augusta County and later Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties, Virginia (now West Virginia). The spelling of the name was changed to Copenhaver after coming to America.

According to the Returns of Earll Township - County of Lancaster - 1772 Jacob Copenhaver (listed as Jacob Koppenhaven) was listed as a Freeman and owed taxes in the amount of $15.00. This reference may apply to his son Jacob.

Also, from 1765 to 1771 a list of people receiving communion at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland included: Elisab. Koppenheferin, Baltzer Koppenheber, Jacob Koppenheber, Charlotta Koppenheberin. The last time Jacob appears is in 1769.

According to PENNSYLVANIA BIRTHS, Lancaster County 1723-1777 by John T. Humphrey, p. 191. Scharlotta Koppenhefer b. ca Jan 1748 father - Jacob mother- Elisabetha. Jacob and Elizabeth were members of the Lutheran Church and early records of Rev. Johan Casper Stoever confirm births and christenings of their children. The dates of death or place of burial for Jacob and Elizabeth or anything else about their life is not known. According to the book "Copenhaver Families in Virginia, compiled by George Griffiths, published October 1994, Jacob volunteered on May 5, 1776 in Captain Lewis Farmer's Company of the Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment, under Colonel Samuel Miles, First Regiment. He was reported missing at Long Island.

Information regarding this family is included in th "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from German-Speaking Lands to North America, Volume I, The Northern Kraichgau" by Annette Kunselman Burgert, published by the Pennsylvan
ia German Society, Breinigville, Pennsylvania.

Location of the village of Meckesheim as supplied by Curt Hofemann@koretsf.com: "Meckesheim with postal code 74909 today is in district HD, Heidelberg, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis (Kreis is an administrative district similar to a US county), in Northern Bad-Wuerttemberg. To find it on a map, ut us 7-8 miles/12 km southest of Heidelberg & 5 miles/8 km south of the border with Hesse in the Odenwald (forest). The river Neckar runs through Heidelberg & a small river called the Elsen runs either from or to the Neckar (can't tell from the map) through Meckesheim where it meets another small river called Maienbach at Meckesheim. Meckesheim is on Route 45 and has a railroad station. It is 15 miles/24 km east of the Rhein which at this point is the border between B-W & Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate). Towns in the immediate vicinity are Monchzell (this is probably your reference to "Munchzell") which is 1 mile/2 km NE of Meckesheim, Mauer, Bammentall, Schlatthausen, Oberhof, Eschelbronn and Zuzenhausen."

It has been determined that Baltzer's date of birth was January 1, 174
1. He was baptized in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church by Johan Casper Stoever on April 20, 1741; sponsors: Johannes Balthaer and wife and Johannes Balthasar Boeshasr and wife Anna. Baltzer probably married Elizabeth Boeshaar, daughter of Balthasar (Baltzer) and Johanna Dorothea (Weider) Boeshaar of Earltown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In the Index to the 1770 Tax Records, Vol. 5 by Gary T. Hawbaker and Clyde L. Graff, Balsar Kopenhever Yr. 1770 and 1770 Earl Comments: Inmate (means he was a renter) Shoomacker RTN/James Kimer (maybe his landlord). He is listed as an inmate (married, not owning land but having a trade) in the 1771 & 1772 tax lists for Earl Township. In 1779 and thereafter, he is listed in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania tax lists. In 1779 Baltzer had 40 acres, 2 horses and 3 cattle; 1783 he had 100 acres, 3 horses, 3 cattle and 3 sheep; 1790 he had 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 cattle, 6 sons, under sixteen, and 1 daughter and wife Elizabeth. In 1797, Baltzer was a supervisor (supervisor over roads or poor, etc) in Shirley Township. Baltzer and family are enumerated on the 1800 Cen
sus but only Elizabeth and family are shown on the 1810 Census. Baltzer probably died in 1804 for he does not appear in the tax list for 1805. Little more is known about their lives.

Baltzer Copenhaver is the direct ancestor of the Northern West Virginia Copenhavers. His children scattered to various parts of the East. Several stayed in Pennsylvania. At least one migrated to present day Northern West Virginia, among them, Isaac, the progenator of Copenhavers in that part of West Virginia.
