greene county info

My great grandfather, Joseph Daugherty was a constable in Greene county in the 1880s. He was listed in the census in 1880 and thanks to the 1890 census being destroy we lost his trail. Is there any history of constables in Greene county? He is not in the 1900 census so I figured he died before then. Any ideas would be great since I keep hitting brick walls. Also, was there a school maybe in the area where young men went away to in their early teens. Census says "at school" then he aslo disappears.
