An account of the "murder" of Samuel Vanatta is published in HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA, 1882, by Rev. William Hanna, pages 129-130; the event took place about the year 1839. I have a reprint of this book (done in 12/1983 and 09/1985), purchased from the (re)printers, Closson Press, 257 Delilah St. Apollo, PA 15613-1933.
Hoping this is the "murder" you asked about.
