Dear Steve,
I tried to post this reply before but it never showed up so will try again.
Benjamin was my 3g grandfather. I have info from my uncle that Rev. Ben was one of three brothers who came from southern Germany, near Switzerland. One followed the Mason-Dixon Line and probably settled in Ohio. He had a letter by a Harry B. Speck, a miller by occupation, dated Jan. 20, 1926 sent from Tiffin, Ohio. He didn't know where the third brother settled. He probably traveled the Shenandoah Valley. In the 1930's he found the name Fanny Speck in Harrisonburg, Va. phone directory. Also in Chapel Church, China Grove, NC. there is a church window dedicated to a Speck family. His father said that the original spelling of the name was probably "Specht" and there was a suggestion that the name was originally Von Speck. I found that Rev. Ben was bornOct. 21, 1806, died April 1887. He married Elizabeth Wallace and she died Nov. 30,1860. I haven't been able to go back any further on either of them.
