Legally kept records for all of Pennsylvania did not begin on a continuous basis until 1885 for marriage records and 1893 for birth and death records. There are also delayed birth records, and some of these may be earlier. (Ask at the courthouse where these are kept.) Records until 1906 are at the county level and will be found in the courthouse--Ridgway for Elk County and Smethport for McKean County. Church records and newspaper reports--check with Elk County Historical Society and Johnsonburg Public Library--often fill in for official records before 1893.
