Hello Ruth:First off in the 1900 census of Spring Creek Twp. of Elk County the #3 listing is the family of Ruth Shanley(which it sounds as though you are related to her??), well on that same census #14 is the lisring of my family(grandfather John F Davis, grandmother Mary, my two aunts and my dad and then Zelda who is listed as Zelda McKenzie(she was my grandmother's half sister) Zelda was 16 years old at the time and was born in 1883. From that time to the 1910 census she apparently married. If you come across any marriage records during that period of a Zelda McKenzie marrying and to who, that would be terrific. I might only assume any license might have been taken out within the county.Second, the Hilda Adda Davis b 7/21/1895 you mention is one of my aunts(I note you have birthplace as Hartman- we always had birthplace at Hallton-- How far is Hartman from Hallton??? My Aunt Frances Anne Salome Elliott Davis was b. 10/10/1891 at Hallton and my dad John K. Davis was born at Hallton 6/12/1893.Thirdly I must tell you that my dad's middle name was originally Knopsnyder, however when he went into the army and they asked hime his middle name (because of so many John Davis's) the first thing he could think of was KING as he hated the other middle name, and so it remained all his life (and it became legal)-My grandfather had a dear friend (living there in Hallton also at the time my grandmother was pregnant -His friend Knopsnyder said, if you name your son after me I will gvie you a five dolloar gold piece-- They shook hands on the deal -- however, my grandmother, though small was mighty - and would not agree to the bargain - however because of the agreement the middle name became Knopsnyder. I have seen this name Knopsnyder for the first time ever in some readings I have seen about Elk County but also in the bookTrue tales of the clarion River, by George Sheffer.(Where my Davis's originated prior to Elk County and where the Knopsnyder family lived also)Next. do you have an extra copy of the Spring Creek Twp directory of 1904?Owned properties residents - John Davis listed there is my grandfather John F (for Francis)Davis. Also, is there any indication just where the property and home were located there in Hallton? As noted in the 1900 census they were about 11 residences from the Shanleys. Most of the extended Davis's were around Clarion County - although it is always possible some of the extended families not accounted for at this time could and no doubt moved around.
By the way my Aunt Frances graduated from Clarion Normal College (now Clarion State) in 1909 and went back to Spring Creek and taught the next year from 1909 -1910 there in the Spring Creek-Hallton area. Do you have any listings? Although she had a lot of middle names I feel she was usually listed as Feances Salome Davis. Then like I said in the fall of 1910 they moved out to the northwest here in Washington State (Everett to be exact) - They were encouraged to come west by the Albert and Sara Smathers family who are also listed on the 1900 census as #11, so they too didn't live too far from the Shanley family. As I was growing up we were very close to the Smathers family that had moved here to Everett where I was born and grew up for a good part of my young life. Mr, Albert Smathers was a real estate and land broker and his wife ran a boarding house where many young men working in the lumber here rented from them. While we were back this summer in Clarion we noticed a very prominent REAL ESTATE business owned and operated by SMATHERS REALTY. We didn't have time to talk to them but we certainly were wondering if they were related to Albert and Sara Smathers. Have yoy ever had occasion to have contact with them? Lastly, I might add I have the pictures mentioned re the school showing my aunt frances (prior to her college education) and my dad there at Hallton - also another one of my aunt Hilda with a grou of Hallton High girls -then a picture of the men working at the mill there (my dad and grandfather are in this) -then a picture of my grandmother with a group of ladies who were with the WCTU County Convention held at Ridgway,PA prior to 1910 (as they left in 1910)- So, at this point hope this points to new helps for both of us. Do you happen to have apicture of the current MAIN STREET of Hallton?
Dorothy Davis Collings
?PS -must note too, that it appears my aunt hilda was about the same age as Ruth Shanley and perhaps were playmates.
