Which may or may not be your couple. I didn't find them on the 1880 census transcription in Ohio or Pennsylvania, looking for a Rachel Greer with HoH John Greer. They might be there, somewhere, as boarders or living with an uncle.

If it IS them, it gives you another spelling variation. The US Census
says that in 1990 the surname Shirley was 1,016th in popularity (Smith was first) and Shurley was 32,843rd, so chances are the clerk who took their names spelled hers wrong.
