I understand your frustration but it is always better to post too much info than far too little. You never know who might be able to help you but without enough specifics they can't sure anything they find is the same family. I assume your James was born Oct 25, 1818 and died June 10, 1908 and was married to Margaret McDaniels: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=barrett&GSfn=james&GSbyrel=in&GSdy=1908&GSdyrel=in&GSst=37&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=23078068&

All are born in PA unless otherwise indicated.

1900 census: James A. Barrett born April 1818 in Pennsylvania, living with the family of Charles W. Barrett in Columbiana County as a boarder (instead of father?).

1880 census: James Barrett 61, Margaret 60 and son Charles 17 living in Pulaski Twp., Beaver County, PA.

1870 census, Pulaski Twp:
James A. Barret (incorrectly indexed as Basset) 51
Margaret 50
Joseph H. 23
William 21
Uriah 19
James 16
Isaac T. 13
Hester S. 11
Charles 7

1860 census, Pulaski Twp:
J. A. Barret 41
Margt 40
William 11
Uriah 9
James 6
Isaac 3
Esther 1

1850 census, New Sewickley Twp, Beaver County:
James Barret 31, born in NJ
Margaret 30
Joseph A. 30 (probably is supposed to be 3)
William H. 1

Most of this you probably already have, however, you might be interested in some other Barrett's that lived in the same areas:

The 1850 census for New Sewickley Twp: On the same page as James are Charles Barrett 17 and Mary 30. Also living in the same township is John W. Barrett 60, born in PA, Margarett 58, born in Germany, Henry 22 and Anthony 17.

The 1860 census has Anton Barrett 25, Rebecca 22 and Margaret 60, born in Germany and then Henry Barrett 32, born in Ohio, with his family living a few doors away from James.

The 1870 census has Charles Basset 47, Mary 50 and Margaret 79, born in Wurttemberg living in New Sewickley Twp. Henry Barrett and family were living in New Brighton, Beaver County. Anton Bassett and family were living in Pulaski Twp (the double SS in these surnames are undoubtedly double RR's).

The 1880 census has Charles Barrett 60, wife Mary 57 living in Columbiana County. His mother was born in Wurttemberg. Anthony and family were also living in Columbiana County and his mother was also born in Wurttemberg. Henry and family were still in New Brighton.

Some of these records you can look at for free at labs.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com. For those you cannot see for free I suggest checking with your local libraries to see if they have Ancestry or Heritage Quest.

I think there are too many coincidences for the ones I found not to be your family. I suggest seeing if the Beaver County Genealogical Society can help you especially with church and cemetery records. The Columbiana County Genealogical Society might also be able to help. It looks like Anton, Henry and Charles didn't live long enough to have a state death certificate in Ohio or Pennsylvania. There might be obituaries for them however. You can look at the death certificates for several of Anton's children for free at: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1195390820093#c=1307272;p=collectionDetails

Other records to check on would be for John and Margaret's estate files which would have been recorded at the Beaver County Register of Wills Office if they either had one. There are probably also deeds for their property which would be on record at the Recorder of Deeds Office for the same office.

Once you have exhausted these possibilities then I would check with the Dauphin County Historical Society to see if they might have church records that include this family particularly James' baptism and his parents' marriage.
