He fought at Ft donelson and was one of the defenders of the famous Hornets' Nest of Shiloh where he was captured with his regiment and taken to a POW camp in Georgia. he never regained his health after release and died far away from home. When the news of Dewitt's death reached Crawford, his younger brother Guy Southwick enlisted into the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Six months later Guy was killed at Gettysburg. Descendants of their siblings family kept the names Dewitt and Guy for a couple generations after the War. Some went to Michigan, some lived in Cook County Illinois, some near Springfield Missouri. One of Dewitt Clinton Southwick's fellow soldiers and close companions in the 14th Iowa kept a detailed diary, another wrote many letters home. This diary and these letters have now been published by the Traer Iowa museum (www.traermuseum.com). Dewitt is mentioned several times and in detail. Anyone researching this line of Southwicks from Nathan Southwick and Susan Guy will be interested in this book. Anyone descended from their family, or anyone who knows of an existing photograph of Dewitt or Guy from their war service are urged to contact the Traer museum.
