If your library subscribes to HeritageQuest Online, and you have a library card number, you may be able to access their census database right from home (I do). They don't have the 1850 census indexed, but they do have all of the census images online. Just be sure to use the "Browse" link instead of the "Search" link. Alternatively, a local LDS Family History Center will probably have an Ancestry.com subscription and you could then use their computers to access the census index/records.
