I don't know who you are trying to get the death certificate from or through, but you do not have to supply the father's name to get it. Try to get it directly from either the State of California or the county recorder's office where he died: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeathmar/pages/certifiedcopiesofbirthdeathrecords.aspx

In many states the forms ask for parents' names but having the names is not necessary for them to process the request. It simply makes it easier for them to make sure they have the right person. You have the dates of birth and death and place of death, that should be enough. You are directly related so there shouldn't be any problems.
