My name is Ted Parker—I am a History major at Middlebury College. Currently, I’m undertaking an independent research project on a relative of mine, John F. Bachman, who enlisted with the Stockton Artillerists in Philadelphia in late December, 1846, and remained with them for the duration of the war. A great deal—perhaps all—of the letters he wrote home to his parents have survived in my family, as well as letters that he wrote after the war, when he took off for the Gold Rush and eventually became an original member of the San Francisco police. As part of my project, I am transcribing his letters, and I would be happy to share the transcriptions with you if you think they would be of interest.

As this is a semester-long project, I’ve got time to really delve deeply into things. I wonder if anyone has letters, newspaper articles, etc. about the Stockton artillerists and/ or the Bachmans that haven't made it on-line. Any information would be useful.

Email is the most reliable way of reaching me, but I’d also be delighted to speak with you on the phone if that would be most convenient. Simply shoot me an email response and we’ll set something up. Hopefully this can be an enriching experience for both of us!

Many thanks,

Ted Parker – Middlebury College, ‘08
