Hi folks,

I am researching my great great grandfather Wendell Schwartz. He lived in Lower Towamensing Township Cir. 1830 - 1880. He appears in census reports and business biographies as a boat builder, a lime burner, and a store keeper. He is listed as a school board director in 1869.

Here's where I need some help.

Question 1:

ALL of Wendell Schwartz's census records say that he was born in France. He was clearly German or Moravian, and a member of Towamensing Union Church, which I understand was a combined Lutheran, German Reformed group. Seems like a Frenchman would be Catholic.

Alsace Lorraine was a German Paletinate and is now part of France. Are there other German ancestors in Carbon County who said "I am French" for that reason?

I did find a 12 year old Schwartz male ariving in Philadelpha from La Havre, France, on Oct 05, 1831 aboard the brig Petit George, point of origin noted as Germany.

Wendell enjoyed a long life in Lower Towamensing, with wife Elizabeth. They had many children and I wonder if any of you have researched their ancestry. Elizabeth/Eliza/Louisa is noted to have been born in Pennsylvania, so I would also like to know her ancestry.

Question 2:

The History of Carbon County states that my greatgrandfather, George Hamm Kemmerer "in 1887, is association with A. O. Swartz, succeeded to the furniture and undertaking buesiness of his father, the firm is still continuing in the old location." I presume A. O. Swartz to be Oscar Schwartz, the son of Valentina Schwartz. Since George Hamm was taken into the Schwartz business, there must be a blood relationship between Wendell Schwartz and Valentina Schwartz. The ship's registry noted above has four Schwartz boys on it. Any other Schwartz's out there who can tell me this family's history?

Any help available would be appreciated.
