George Hodsons family lost in Johnstown Flood

I have a real brick wall. My Great Grandfathers brother, George Hodson, was in the McKean Co census in 1880 with a wife Mary and a son W.J. 1 yr old. In 1900 I find him living in a boarding house in WV as a widow, no child either. In 1901 he married his second wife, Catherine. Every census he was in a different place moving through PA, WV, MI and OH. I have hunted for where Mary died and what happened to the son WJ for years. I finally found an obit for George that states three of his children died in the Johnstown PA flood. None of them are listed with the known dead from the flood but I understand the list of people is far from complete. His first wife was not listed in his obit either. Since there was no 1890 census does anyone have any idea of how I might find info on this family? My goal is to find info on the children and to find out his first wifes maiden name as I believe she was a sister to my great grandmother and their parents are a complete mystery. I have checked cemetery records and found no listings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
