Dotty, I can't help with Ellen Griffen Mason's parents, but I think "D. S." meant "domestic servant". Young women as well as young men had this occupation, so it was not something related to the railroad, blacksmithing, etc. If Ellen died in 1899 there could be a County death record for her. Have you looked on Joyce Tice's magnificent Tri-Counties Genealogy site? Sometimes these death records gave parents' names. http://www.joycetice.com/jmtindex.htm But if their first child was b. in NJ (the 1870 enumeration says PA), that could be where they were married around 1853.
