Sandy;

Thanks for the response.

I had been out to the site which you included and from that I did pick up the Monroeton Cemetery. But I had thought that by 1870 there were several cemeteries which could meet the definition of "Buried Monroeton, Bradford, PA"??!! If you find anything that might be of help to me, please emaill me.

The story behind this quest is unusual. My great grandmother's first marriage was to a Major St Clair MANDEVILLE and there were two children born before 1870. I find her accounted for in the 1840 census and she does appear in the 1850 census. But she's not found in 1860 and 1870 and has been found in the 1880 thru 1920 census. I was never able to find birth, death, census, marriage or any other record of MANDEVILLE with that first name. In addition, since great grandmother indicated the title "Major", he must have been in the Civil War, but no list of soldiers shows his name! The same for the children even though great grandmother gave what info I have to her daughter (my grandmother). I came to the point where I thought that great grandmother had hidden a precnancy without marriage. Great grandmother gave my grandmother info that both children were buried in Moneroeton and the husband there also. Burial records were no value.

But then I ran into a record of an investigation into the way General Oliver O. Howard (not associated with anyone in our family) handled government money and that investigation mentioned St Clair MANDEVILLE at least 20 times and mentioned his death as had been given by the great grandmother. At last I knew he really existed! But that didn't serve to confirm anything except the place (New Orleans) and date of death.

The death of one of the children was in Perth Amboy, but when I enquired I found that death records were not submitted by the city to the state and the city doesn't have them either. From the death dates of the 2 children, we know that great grandmother went to Perth Amboy before 1870 and therefore should have appeared in the 1870 census, but she doesn't. It's almost as if great grandmother and St Clair MANDEVILLE were trying to be invisible.

Again, thanks for your help.

Regards Chris Coddington
