Posted by: Lynne Howell (ID *****2851) Date: July 02, 2007 at 11:19:12

I am trying to find information regarding the families of Ellen Lunger and Hyland "Leon" Finney:

1880 Federal Census, Town of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, taken 11 June 1880 by Chas. R. Jenkins:

3. Lunger, Reubin H.; son; white; male; age 13; single; at school; b. NY; parents b. NY.

1900 Federal Census, Ward Six of the City of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, taken 11 June 1900 by Harry Espey:

3. Finney, Martha; daughter; white; female; age 7; single; attends school; b. NY; father b. PA; mother b. NY.

7. Howard, Edward; cousin-in-law; white; male; age 46; single; b. MI; parents b. NY; laborer.

I believe that Hyland "Leon" Finney, b. 4 Mar 1885 (according to WWI Steuben Co. draft register) to be the son of Hyland L. Finney and Mary Adline "Addie" Bailey. They had the following children:

1. Hyland "Leon" Finney, b. 4 Mar 1885
2. Abbe/Abbie Finney, b. 19 Jan 1891 who m. Howard Shedden.
3. Olive Finney (b. Feb 1888)
4. Cora Adline Finney, b. 12 Apr 1894 in LeRoy Twp., Bradford Co., PA, to Hyland Finney and Addie M. Finney. Their residence was LeRoy Twp., and Hyland's occupation is carpenter.
5. Hazel Frances (Lulu?) Finney, b. 19 Jan 1897 in Granville Twp., Bradford Co., PA, to Hyland Finney and Mary Adline Bailey. Their residence was Granville Twp.

Hyland L. Finney d. sometime abt. 1900. I do not know exactly where he died, but it would have been in either Granville or Troy Twps., Bradford Co., PA, because Addie is listed as Hyland's widow in the 1900 Directory for Granville Twp., Bradford Co., PA.

1900 Federal Census for the second district of Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA, taken 1 June 1900 by (?) Verbeek:

Dwelling 4/Family 4:

1. VanNoy, Jake; head; white; male; b. Dec 1842; age 57; m. 5 yrs.; b. NJ; parents b. NJ; farmer.
2. VanNoy, (?); wife; white; female; b. June 1843; age 56; married 5 yrs.; b. PA; parents b. PA.
3. Finney, Leon; servant; white; male; b. Mar 1885; age 15; single; b. PA; parents b. PA.
4. Finney, Abbie; servant; white; female; b. Jan 1891; age 9; single; b. PA; parents b. PA.
5. Blish, Earl; servant; white; male; b. Feb 1882; age 18; single; b. PA; father b. NY; mother b. PA.

In the same census in Dwelling ?/Family ?:

1. *Leonard, Addie; head; white; female; b. Sept 1861; age 38; married 17 yrs; mother of six w/five surviving children; b. PA; parents b. PA.
2. Finney, Cara/Cora; daughter; white; female; b. Apr 1864; age 6; single; at school; b. PA; parents b. PA.
3. Finney, (Lulu?); daughter; white; female; b. Jan 1891; age 3; b. PA; parents b. PA.

*No doubt the enumerator combined Hyland's middle name w/Addie's name because she indicates that she is married (not widowed), and has been married 17 yrs.

1900 Federal Census for the Town of Penn Yan, Milo Twp., Yates Co., NY:

1. Bailey, Reed D.; head; b. Feb 1862; age 32; married 2 yrs., b. PA; parents b. PA (he is Addie's brother).
2. Bailey, Ella G.; wife; b. Mar 1875; age 25; married 2 yrs.; no children; b. NY; parents b. NY.
3. Finney, Olive; niece; b. Feb 1888; age 12; single; b. PA; parents b. PA.

1910 Federal Census for Loyalsock Twp., Lycoming Co., PA:

1. Updegraff, Clarence; head; white; male; age 37; married twice; married 4 yrs.; b. PA; parents b. PA.
2. Updegraff, Addie; white; female; age 49; married twice; married 4 yrs.; seven live births w/six children surviving; b. PA; parents b. PA.
3. Finney, Cora; white; female; age 15; single; b. PA; father b. WI**; mother b. PA.

**Hyland L. Finney did reside in WI as a boy and young man, but he returned w/his mother to PA after 1880:

Finney-Bailey: At the house of John P. Bates by Elder J. L. Phoenix, Dec. 31st, 1882, Mr. Hiland L. Finney and Miss Addie M. Bailey, both of LeRoy Twp.

Storrs-Bailey: At the house of John P. Bates by Elder J. L. Phoenix, Dec. 31st, 1882, Mr. Chas. E. Storrs of Granville Twp., and Miss Flora M. Bailey of LeRoy Twp.

Addie and Flora were sisters.

In the 1920 Federal Census for Williamsport, Lycoming Co., PA:

1. Updegraff, Clarence; white; male; 40; widowed; b. PA; parents b. PA.

However, Addie is not dead! She is found in the 1930 Federal Census for Catlin, Chemung Co., NY:

1. Finney, Hyland L.; head; white; male; age 45; married once @ age 23; b. PA; parents b. PA; farmer.
2. Finney, Eldean A.; wife; white; female; age 40; married once @ age 18; b. NY; parents b. NY.
3. Finney, Leon H.; son; white; male; age 13; single; b. NY; father b. PA; mother b. NY.
4. Finney, Ellen A.; daughter; age 11; single; b. NY; father b. PA; mother b. NY.
5. Finney, Edward C.; son; white; male; age 9; single; b. NY; father b. PA; mother b. NY.

9. Finney, Marry A.; mother; white; female; age 68; widow; b. PA; parents b. PA.

OBITUARY -- MRS. LEON FINNEY:

Mrs. Ellen Finney, 44, late of 121 East 14th St., Elmira Heights, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 1935 at 6 p.m. of pneumonia. She is survivied by her husband, Leon Finney. She had been the mother of 11 children, none (nine) of whom are living; five daughters, Mrs. Martha Rorick of Elmira Heights; Mrs. Charles Walker, Elmira, Ellen, Cora and Marion at home; four sons, Leon, Jr., Edward, Manley and Alfred at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lunger of Elmira Heights, an aunt, Mrs. Anna Hildreth of Elmira. The mother and a son of Mrs. Finney are ill of pneumonia in an Elmira hospital. The body is in the Ballard Funeral Home, Elmira Heights where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. H. H. MacArthur will officiate. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

According to Woodlawn Cemetery records Ellen Finney was buried there on 23 Jan 1935. There is also an Alvin Finney buried there on 19 Mar 1932. I do not know if he is a son of Ellen and Leon, or some other relation or none at all; however, the name Alvin is used extensively in the Finney/Phinney family.

Hyland "Leon" Finney is found in Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. He d. 7 Apr 1967. Buried near him in section A are Neola Jean Finney, d. 2 Feb 1945 and Marian Janet Finney, d. 25 Jan 1971. I do not know if Neola and Marian are relatives of Leon. There is also a Manley Finney buried in section K. He d. 2 June 1943 (I do not know if this is Leon's son).

I do have some information regarding the family of Leon's sister, Abbie.

My great-great-grandfather, Allen McKean Phinney, was an older brother of Hyland L. Finney. Allen's and Hyland's parents were Nathan Newell Finney and Melinda Emily Ballard:

Children:

Alfred D. Finney, b. abt. 1839
Allen McKean Phinney, b. abt. 1841
Anson C. Finney
Alvin T. Finney
Olive Annitt Finney (Foot/Foote)
A. Herrick Finney
Hyland L. Finney

I can supply some further information on several of these individuals.

Nathan Newell Finney was b. abt. 1810 in Broome Co., NY, s/o Apollis N. Finney and Phoebe Buck.

Melinda Emily Ballard was b. abt. 1818 in Bradford Co., PA, d/o Nathan C. Ballard and Malinda White.

I am interested in adding information regarding Leon's and Ellen's family to my Finney/Phinney genealogy. I can find no information regarding James or Reuben/Reubin Lunger before the 1880 Census. I cannot find information regarding Reuben and wife after 1910. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
