Janet Thompson was b. 10 Oct 1828 in Schuylkill, PA to George and Catherine Penman Thompson of Scotland. She married Robert Hill in PA sometime before 1848.
My great-grandfather, George R. Hill was born 31 Jan 1849 in Port Carbon Norwegian Schuylkill PA to Robert and Janet May Thompson Hill. George had a brother, Alexander Hill, b. abt. 1847-1848 who died young. George’s father, Robert, died before the 1850 census and is a complete mystery to me. I do not know when or where he was born or who his parents or siblings were.
Janet Thompson Hill remarried to Hugh Lindsay Campbell, who was b. Scotland and immigrated to PA via Nova Scotia Canada.
In 1850 Janet and her son George Hill were living with Janet’s Penman cousins in Norwegian twp. Janet’s son, Alexander Hill was living with Janet’s father and stepmother George and Margaret McLearnan Thompson in Blythe twp.
In 1880, George Hill was living with wife, Isabella McClean Hill in Dauphin co. PA and gave his father’s birthplace as Scotland. Was he talking about Robert Hill or stepfather, Hugh Campbell who was b. Scotland.?
In 1900 George Hill was living in Mesa County, Colorado and appeared on the census twice. In the town of Grand Juction, where he had a construction business and where his wife and daughters lived, he said his father was b. “Canada Eng”. In Fruita, where George had a ranch with his sons, he said his father was b. Scotland.
In 1910, Orchard Mesa: father b. Scotland.
I have not found a Hill in Schuylkill County from Scotland or from Canada. I am inclined to believe that George could be related to the Hills from Berks and West Penn, Schuylkill County, PA. The given names in West Penn show up in George’s children. (Those names that did not come from wife Isabella McClean’s or from Janet Thompson’s families.) Some of my Campbells were living in West Penn, as were some of my Brittons.) There is even an Anna Britton living with a Jonathan Hill in West Penn in 1850. Anna and her father Benjamin Britton were Basketmakers. Jonathan Hill was a farmer, but in 1880 his son, Daniel Hill was a Basketmaker.
So, that is as far as I have been able to get looking for Robert Hill. I would like to know who his parents and siblings were. When and where and how he died? Where he is buried?
I am so grateful for any clues! If Robert Hill’s family was not from Scotland, they were my only Schuylkill ancestors who were not, but I an inclined to believe at this point that Robert Hill's parents came from either Schuylkill or Berks, PA or both.
