According to his children's (Barbara and Chauncey)census records, William Owens was born in Ireland. His wife, by the same records, was born in Pennsylvania. She was probably the granddaughter of Duncan McVicker. William Owens first appears in Bedford Co., PA in 1814 in the St. Clair tax list. In the 1820 St. Clair Township census, he was called "John Owens" and he was living next to the Garretsons. It appears that his first wife was a Garretson and they had a daughter named Ann. By 1830, he was in the Cumberland Valley Township. he was married to Elizabeth McVicker by this time. His last appearance was in the 1840 census. By 1850, three of his sons appeared to have passed away and William and Elizabeth don't appear in the census either. Some of their children, James, Mary Ann, and Chauncey were living with different families. William Owens may have had a sister named Margaret who married Zachariah Luman since they lived next door and by 1850, it appears that the land that William Owens was living on in 1840 may have been in the hands of the Luman family.
