The Murder of Will Dagenhart
Posted by: Jerry Dagenhart (ID *****2323) Date: November 18, 2004 at 10:58:54
  of 1471

I have just Learned that in 1883 My Great Great Uncle James William Henry Dagenhart (born NC) moved his wife and children to Georgetown in Beaver County PA.They had been living in Pughsville in Hancock County West Virginia just over the state line.

He was a Coal Miner and one day on the way home from work he encountered a man(Mr Phillips?) and they got into a heated political discussion.Phillips killed Will Dagenhart and ran over him with a wagon to make it look like an accident.
Dagenharts bodyw as found in the muddy road and the deathw as ruled an accident.

This would have happened between 1883 and the spring of 1887,I think it was Fall 1886.

The Widow Margaret Reynolds Evans Dagenhart took her small children to the Kansas territory in the Spring of 1887 and her oldest daughter Alice Evans Diamond recorded the tragedy.

She also recorded that Years later the Murder was being tried for another crime and confessed to killing Dagenhart.
I assume Will Dagenhart may be buried in the George Town Cemetery .Can someone check is there a compilation of the cemetery?

Was there a local Paper in the 1880's?

Would the Murder have been recorded at the Court house after the confession???

James William Henry Dagenhart(Pappy Will as Alice Called Him) was my Great Grandfathers Baby brotehr. He left NC in
1873 or 1874 to avoid a shotgun Wedding. He never saw his parents again as his father died in 1876 and his Mother in 1882.No one in NC ever knew what became of him.

Through some lucky breaks and finding some Dear Cousins In Oklahoma and California I have peiced togetehr the story of his life after he left NC.

I would like to be sure he has a tombstone and I want to visit his grave.

Ia lso would like to know all I can about the tragedy that
ended his life.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jerry Dagenhart
