I am seeking direct descendants of Elizabeth THORN of Gettysburg fame of the Civil War. The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic have a chapter (called a "circle") at Gettysburg named the Elizabeth Thorn Circle. Any woman age 10 or older who has a direct ancestor who was a Union veteran is eligible to join. The Ladies of the G.A.R. is the oldest women's hereditary society in the U.S. and is Congressionally chartered. It was formed nationally in 1881. The cost of joining is a one-time application fee of $10 plus $20 annual dues. Applicants must provide documentation of relationship to Union veteran and the Union veteran's military service in the Civil War.
