Somehow I lost my response to your post. Here goes again -- it sounds like you are on the right track. The name "Beatty" or "Beaty" was used as a first name for one of the sons of Elizabeth Laughlin Elliott, daughter of Sarah Beatty and James William Laughlin. She and her husband James Elliott lived in Beaver County, PA.
James William Laughlin apparently almost never used his first name; he was always known as just "William Laughlin." I wonder if his father was named James. He and Sarah also named a son "Wilson Laughlin," which is another clue that they were connected to the Wilsons who married into the Beatty family of Adams and York County, PA. So far as I know none of them named a child "McFarland" but then it's possible.
I'll keep your message and let you know if anything turns up.
