HI, the pronunciation is as easy as it looks. Use the word Boy, Take off the,( B )OYadd the ER. I realy don't know how else to explain it. I know there are several spellings and different accents. As far as I have been able to find it is a Swiss/German name with a French accent. There are many spellings. Orr, Auer, Err, Ore, Eyer and Ayer.Sometimes people pronounce it OYEAH (spelled Oyez), this is a courtroom term.
The Oyer family supposedly came from Switzerland and Germany through France and then on to the States. I have located Oyers as early as the Civil war, tho I find no link to them. Some even ended up in Canada. Many were Swiss Mennonites or Evangelical Mennonites sometimes also known as Amish. There are many that established themselves in Tazewell County, Indiana ( where my links to the past are) and also many in Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania. I never heard of the name you mentioned. Do you think it is a name that merged with another like the French Canadian names, or the hyphenated names in marriages? It is realy quite unique. Rose Oyer Gauthier.
