John Joesph William Molesworth Oxley (1783-1828)
Hoping someone can help me with my research regarding the following fellow:
JOHN JOSEPH WILLIAM MOLESWORTH OXLEY
b. 1783-85
p. Kirkham Abbey, Westow, Yorkshire
d. 1828
p. Sydney, New South Wales.
This fellow was Surveyor-General, adventurer and explorer in NSW in the early 1800s. Discovered the Brisbane River and named it after the then Governor of NSW (now the site of the City of Brisbane, capital of Queensland).
His parents:
JOHN OXLEY SR (b.abt 1760 ?Where)
ISOBEL MOLESWORTH (b. abt 1761, ?Kirkham - apparently the daughter of Viscount Molesworth - don't know who he was).
Family tradition has it that he was in some way related to my OXLEY ancestors from Greasbrough in West Riding, but I haven't yet found the connection. The problem is that although the Greasbrough Oxley's have been well researched, the Kirkham/Westow Oxley family doesn't seem to be well defined.
Hoping someone may help to shed light on the Kirkham/Westow OXLEY family in more detail and help me gather biographical details (including BDM, family relationships).
Many thanks,
Roger.
