Per court records and land records for Daniel Layton estate and Emeline LAYTON Oxford Carroll land transaction. There was a dispute over land amongst children of Daniel & Charlotte MAPLES Layton. It listed Emeline LAYTON Oxford and her husband John OXFORD amongst them. On a different land transaction it stated Emeline LAYTON Oxford Carrol's heirs as John OXFORD and Mary A OXFORD. Date on Daniel LAYTON estate about late 1860. Emeline married John OXFORD about late 1860. No records for this marriage in Stoddard County, MO. Date on the last land transaction would have been after 1867 when Emeline married Matthew CARROLL and he died in 1870. His estate left to his children.

Emeline 8 MO

As you can see Emeline LAYTON was born about 1842. So she could have married either John (sons) in the OXFORD families. The John OXFORD's were born in 1845 and 1847.
It is possible that John OXFORD age 36 Stoddard County, MO & James OXFORD age 33 Dunklin County, MO could be brothers from TN. Also James OXFORD could have been the other person living with John OXFORD in the 1840 census of Stoddard County, MO in the same age bracket as John OXFORD. There were NO more OXFORDs listed in the 1860-1870-1880 or 1900 census in Stoddard or Dunklin Co, MO. There were NO OXWORTH or HOXWORTH listed in 1840-1870 in Stoddard or Dunklin Co, MO. There was only one John HOXWORTH listed in the 1880 Stoddard Co, MO census as a boarder, living with his sister Mary A. E. ESTES and brother-in-law, William M. ESTES.
John OXFORD and Emeline LAYTON, married about 1860-61 & had 2 children. John OXFORD died about 1866-67 then Emeline OXFORD married Matthew CARROLL 13 Oct 1867 and he died 5 Aug 1870. Emeline CARROLL must have died before the 1880 census.
Her daughter Mary A. OXFORD b. Aug 1861 married William M. ESTIS 19 Nov 1876, Stoddard Co, MO. William M ESTES and Mary A. OXFORD/HOXWORTH had 2 children Ida M. ESTES b.1874, Thomas Jefferson ESTES b. Dec 1879. William ESTES died before 1882 and Mary ESTES married Eli HESTER 5 Jan 1882 and had 6 kids. Eli HESTER died about 1899. Ida ESTES married 27 Jan 1895 to Eli Johnson PRUITT. When Mrs. Ida PRUITT was informant for her brothers death certificate (Thomas Jefferson ESTES)she listed William ESTES as their father and Mary OXWORTH as their mother.
John HOXWORTH brother of Mary A. ESTES was b. 3 Sep 1866 according to the 1880 Stoddard County, census. John HOXWORTH married Eliza HESTER 5 Jan 1892. They had 13 children with 9 living in 1920. John HOXWORTH born in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co, MO died 19 Feb 1944 in Kennett, Dunklin Co, MO. His father listed as John HOXWORTH, birthplace Unknown and Mother name & birthplace Unknown. Eliza / Ella (Elizabeth) HESTER Hoxworth was born 24 Aug 1870 (1872lmc) in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co, MO and died 21 Jun 1958 in Portageville, New Madrid Co, MO, son's home, Louis HESTER Jr. Her home was in Parma, New Madrid Co, MO.
Well there it is in a nutshell. Hopefully you can figure it out and hopefully it's not real complicated. I really don't believe John HOXWORTH's father was from England. Maybe an ancestor was from there.
Any questions? Maybe I can help.
