Samuel Oxford Sr., wrongly reported as the son of Thomas and Sarah Lulpec Oxford, has these things believed about him by descendents in the United States:
He was a supposedly a member of a wealthy English family, and fell in love with a poor Welsh girl, named Mary Ann Brown. His parents objected to their marriage, so they ran away to Wales, and came from Wales to the Virginia colony. (This is a legend, coming down through only one of many branches of the family. It should be noted legends of star-crossed lovers, fleeing to the colones, are very common. A great-grandson, who never know Samuel Oxford Sr., or his wife, reported in his own old age that Samuel Oxford Sr. was of English origin, but came here from Wales, and his son, Samuel Oxford Jr., was born in Virginia. There's no proof of this, and no circumstantial evidence found in support of it either.)
Samuel and Mary Ann Brown Oxford supposedly lived in Stafford County, Virginia, where they had a son, Samuel Oxford, another son, and a daughter. (I covered the problems with this report in an earlier posting.)
Samuel and Mary Ann Brown Oxford supposedly moved to North Carolina with son, Samuel Oxford Jr.. There was a John Oxford there to whom he was certinly related, but it's unclear if John was his brother, or an older son. Circumstantial evidence found there strongly suggests the Mary Oxford found there was John's widow, not Samuel Sr.'s (This too is covered in an earlier posting.)
There's no proof though that SAmuel Oxford Sr.was born in England, married Mary Ann Brown, came to the colonies from Wales, or lived in Virginia.
We know only that Samuel Oxford Jr. was his son, John Oxford was related to them, and that he lived in North CArolina, farmed there, wes a member of the Church of England, owned one female slave, and lived in North Carolina from the time Samuel Oxford Jr. was nearly grown, until his own death.
If there anything I can do to help you, please let me know.
Always,
Lynn
