Yes, I learned some time ago to use information from the Internet only as a guide, helping in finding possible ancestor and family members. Where others have mentioned time frame and places for birth, death or marriage for records in which to search.
I have also found these different spellings in my family line and of course, you have to check them all out. In James Ownbey's Revolutionary War pension records which I sent for some years ago, it looks like his name is spelled Ownbey, Owenby, Ownsby and Ownby from what I've seen on the different application forms. Our family line kept the Ownbey spelling. Would be interesting to hear of some of the reasons, beside one not knowing how to spell their name and was taken down however the census record person or any other form of record taken. Family members from my Reed family changed the spelling of their surname to Reid, as the Republicans wanted to be know a "different" from their Democratic family member.
Thanks for writing,
Billie Miller
