Josh, whay not ask a simple question, like "why is the sky blue"? LOL. There are several opinions/theories as to the origin of the name Ownby/Owenby/Ownbey etc. One is that it is from a Norse name Aun which was then Aunby (meaning from Aun). The other opinion is that it comes from the town of Oadby in Leistershire, England. The town still exists but there are no Ownby's left there. Beginning in 1156 there was a Thomas Ondeby who was Sheriff of Rutland. You will see many different Old English spellings. Ondeby, Oneby, Onebey, Oudeby, Onby....this list goes on. email me at potm1@airmail.net with a little more information about your father and grandfather and perhaps I can help you find your ansectors.
