Nicholas Owenby and his family left St. Joseph, MO in 1845 and traveled west to Oregon on the historic Oregon trail. They were among the group which took the infamous Meek Cutoff which cost somewhere between 30 and 70 lives. More people died on this part of the trail than died the following year in the Donner party. I am seeking information about Nicholas (born 1794, the last child of John Owsenby and Nancy Porter)and his wife, Lucy Martin. He was a brother of James who married Joanna Sims. One of the sons, John, of Nicholas and Lucy was killed by Indians in Oregon or California by Indians in 1852. There is a book called the Terrible Trail by Keith Clark which describes the Meek Cutoff and apparently has considerable information Nicholas who was one of the elected lieutenants of the wagon train. I am trying get a copy of the Clark book which is out of print.

I am also seeking information on all Oswenby men who served in the Civil War, both Confederate and Union.
