Martha Owen Arends, 73, of Oak Brook, Ill., and La Quinta died Feb. 8, 2004, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. She was born March 25, 1930, to William H. and Louise Hoadley Owen in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Donald Louis Arends on Dec. 27, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa.
She was the owner and manager of a travel agency in Hinsdale, Ill. for 10 years and was a principle of Donald L. Arends Inc., an advertising agency in Oak Brook, Ill. A member of the La Grange Country Club in Illinois, she served as president of its women’s association and was public relations director of the 81st USGA Women’s Open Championship. She was also a member of the La Quinta Country Club and active in its ladies golf association.She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Donald; her daughter, Nancy Strehlow of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Michael K. of South Boston, Mass., and John C. of St. Charles, Ill.; her sister, Dorothy Williamson of Des Moines, Iowa; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the FitzHenry Chapel in Coachella, with a memorial service to follow at 5 p.m. Spreading of ashes will be at the First Presbyterian Church garden in La Grange, Ill., in June, with FitzHenry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that donations be made to Desert Regional Medical Center or to the American Cancer Society.
