Amanda Melvina Overton - Help
Posted by: Pamala Clay-Owen (ID *****1151) Date: August 27, 2009 at 12:18:34

I am a descendant of Amanda through her daughter Jackaline. (multiple spellings) Many years ago, my great-grandmother, Aver Henderson Martin (Jackaline's daughter) told me that Amanda had 5 children but was never married. The 1880 Randolph Co census gave some credence to that story, as it shows Amanda, with 2 of her children, still living at home with Jacob & Eliza, all with the last name Overton. After that time, I had seen various references on the different websites, where someone had noted that Amanda was married to Andrew J. McCormick. (again, many variations on the spelling of his last name) FINALLY, after 20+ years of research, I found Amanda listed in the 1900 Randolph Co census, married to Andrew McCommick. (The children on this census are listed as her step-children) However, the census shows they had only been married since 1894. So my question is, does anyone know if Amanda's children listed in the 1880 census (plus any others)were Andrew's or someone elses? This has driven me crazy for years.
