Oberlies-1850NYC to Oberly -1850NYC - Overly present

Interesting find. Jacob Oberlies and family arrive in NYC May 22, 1850 aboard the "Actress" from Germany. Three months later, on August 14, 1850 Jacob Oberlies is eneumerated for the 1850 Census. A few households away is the household of Antonie Oberly and family. I suspect they are related. In yet another household 2 pages before Jacob Oberlies 1850 listing, there appears a listing of Elizabeth Oberly.
I suspect this surname change was an attempt to AMERICANIZE the Oberlies surname.
Interested in hearing from others about Oberlies to Overly surname change.
