Hi Gail
My husband's grandfather was James Overholt, a brother to George.James told his eldest daughter that his father (or maybe grandfather) came by boat from Europe (she wasn't sure if it was Scotland or England) He had a brother, both quite young around 3 or 4 and their parents died on route. She wasn't sure where they landed but thought it might be somewhere in the Maritimes (maybe Nova Scotia).Since the boys were orphans, they were adopted by two different families.Staats was adopted by the Overholts and he said he didn't know who adopted his brother and that he could meet him on the street and would not be able to recognize him.I would really like to know more about what George wrote and/or told his descendants.Perhaps he and his siblings are "Home Children" who came to Canada to work. Also I can't remember if she said it was her grandfather (Staats father of James) or James' grandfather (Staats son of Jacob) who was the adopted child in the story.Since George said something similar there must be some truth to the story. If any of Staats Overholt & Matilda Phillips' other descendants have heard some other variation or additional details to the story I would love to hear from all of you as well.My email is [email protected]
