I think we are going to have a productive exchange, Cousin Lyla. One of our scenarios is probably right, the other probably wrong. Which will it be?? Peter (as I call him) is also my 6th GGF. I have heard of the work that Shirley and Ken did but have not read it.
My reconstruction of the history of the Deitz family is based on the excellent research of Henry Z. Jones, Jr., which he published in 1991 in More Palatine Families. In it he presents very convincing evidence that he discovered the baptism records of the children of Johan Peter Dietz in the books of the Nordhofen Parish church, Vielbach, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany.
In my research I also relied heavily on William V. H. Barker's excellent 1999 genealogical compendium, Families of Herkimer, Montgomery & Schoharie. I believe it is an essential resource for anyone seriously interested in early Schoharie and Berne families.
[Jones has quite a bit to say in The Palatine Families of New York 1710 about the family of Peter Oberbach s/o and Heinrich Oberbach. In it Jones references Shirley M. Overbagh's "excellent family history..." Jones found the ancestral origins of the Oberbach in Zurbach in the Parish of Maxsey (11 km. south of Hachenburg), and in Maxsain (2 km. further s.w.)]
Finding the German ancestral home of the Dietz family led Jones to discover that Johan Peter Dietz was baptized in the parish of Nordhofen 27 Jun 1690, son of Johann Wilhelm Dietz and Maria Sturm. On 6 Jul 1712 he married Anna Eva Becker. Jones found the baptism records for eight children, although Barker says there was probably a ninth, Rosina. On 18 Jan 1730, only four days after their last child was baptized, Johan Peter died. It now appears that all of the living children, with the exception of the youngest, emigrated with their widowed mother some time between their father's 1730 death and 1740. Jones says that Henrich P. emigrated in 1744.
Johannes, his sister Maria Elisabetha, and their mother Anna Eva, spent their early years in their new country near Loonenburg (now Athens), Greene Co., NY, while the rest of the family continued west to finally settle several miles east of Schoharie; just south of what is now Berne, Albany County, NY.
Jones says that Peter Oberhach's brother Johann Peter md. Anna Ludovicha on 10 Jan 1703 according to the church book at Nordhofen, which is near Maxsain. Nordhofen is where the Dietz family is from, and would perhaps explain why Maria Elizabeth and Johannes first settled in Loonenburg near Peter Oberbach who had immigrated in 1710.]
Jacob Weidman, who Barker says is probably the Hans Jacob baptized 28 Oct 1720 Steinmaur, Switzerland (son of Felix Weidman and Anna Huber according to an IGI record). Barker also says he is undoubtedly the (Hans) Jacob Weidman who was unmarried when he emigrated from Bachs, Switzerland about 1738 - 1743 (according to Faust's "Lists of Swiss Emigrants...")
More Palatine Families (MPF) has conflicting information as to when Jacob Weidman married Maria Elisabetha Dietz. Jones has Jacob Weidman first marrying Elisabetha Oberbach bpt. 10 weeks old 19 July 1727 at Zion Lutheran Church (d/o Peter). Jones says that the 15 Sept 1743 Zion Lutheran Church marriage records say Jacob md. Elisabetha Scheid [although I understand the records actually has the last name as "Schieds." This becomes significant as I will explain later.] Jones goes on to say that the sponsors of their children's baptisms show her to be an Oberbach.
Elisabetha Scheid Oberbach would have been 16 years old if she was the one who md. Jacob Weidman in 1743; and the marriage name of Schieds suggests she was already a widow.
Since then Jones has obtained additional from Bruce Wideman, a direct descendant of Jacob Weidman. Bruce has shared this evidence with me; as well as a letter from Henry Jones with new conclusions regarding the marriage of Jacob Weidman. Jones will be publishing this change in a new book later this year. This has allowed me to present here a much more accurate genealogy for this branch of the family.
In writing MPF Jones had concluded that Elis. Shieds was probably actually "an Oberbach" partly based on the 13 Nov 1749 sponsorship of the Zion Lutheran Church baptism of Jacob's son Peter by "Pieter Overbach and Joh. Eva, gr-par." Jones now believes that Johanna Eva is Anna Eva Becker. If so, this would be the first evidence of their marriage.
Jones now is also now of the opinion that, although the 1743 marriage record identifies Jacob Weidman's wife as Lisabeth Schieds, pronounced Sheets in German, she was probably Elisabetha Dietz, pronounced Deets in German. In other words the recorder of the marriage misunderstood the surname.
There is a similar Zion Lutheran Church baptism record for Peter Dietz, son of Maria Elisabeth's brother Johannes Dietz and Maria Oberbach, daughter of Peter Oberbach. The 26 Aug 1743 baptism was also sponsored by "Pieter Overbagh and Joh. Eva -grandparents." This is the second evidence of the marriage of Peter O. and Anna Eva Becker. It is very interesting to me that in this case, regardless of whether or not they were married, the Peter Oberbach was the baby's maternal grandfather, and Anna Eva Becker his paternal grandmother.
Another previously confusing record is the 3 Jun 1754 Schoharie Reformed Church baptism record for Adam Weidman. It identifies Adam's father as Jacob Weidman and his mother as Elisabeth Shulthys. This caused both Jones and Wm. V H Barker in his Families of Schoharie to speculate that Jacob may have married again. Thanks to Wally Weidman, it is now clear that Elisabeth "Shulthys" was in fact Maria Elisabetha Dietz. Wally has the family bible of Adam Jr., son of the above Adam baptized in 1754. In the bible, Adam Jr. writes, "my grandfather was Jacob Weidman, his wife my grandmother was Maria Elesabeth Deits." Thus one can assume that Maria Elisabetha Dietz had been previously married to a ShuIthys when she married Jacob Weidman in 1743. I surmise that "Scheids" was a mispelling of Shultys.
Thanks to new information provided by Bruce Wideman, it is also now known that Maria Elisabetha Dietz Shulthys had a son when she married Jacob Weidman. Bruce has a copy of an indenture dated 1794, which is a deed for 261 acres in Berne that Jacob Weidman is selling to his son Petrus. It reads in part as follows: "....which he the said Petrus Weidman paid unto William Weidman, Jacob Weidman Jun'r and Annatie Zimmer, the children of the said Jacob Weidman each 50 pounds lawful money as aforesaid and unto Matthias Schultes, his wife's son, the sum of twenty pounds like money as aforesaid by the order and direction of him the said Jacob Weidman."
Baptism records show that Jacob Weidman moved his family to Berne about 1751; with them was the teen-aged Matthias Shultes. There Jacob and Elisabetha joined her siblings who had settled in the Switzkill Valley more than a decade earlier.
Having initially settled in Loonenburg, Johannes Dietz was living there when he married Maria Oberbach (Overbaugh), daughter of above mentioned Peter Oberbach and Elizabeth Styne. Sometime after the 16 Feb. 1752 Loonenburg baptism of their youngest son Jacob, they joined his brothers in Switzkill Valley. As you know, in 1781 Johannes and his wife were massacred.
On p. 712 of Palatine Families Jones says: "An unplaced Anna Eva Oberbach joined the Schoharie Ref. Church with letters 22 March 1752." It immediately came to my mind that this is Anna Eva Dietz, and that this is the most credible evidence that she did indeed marry Peter Oberbach. I am guessing that after Peter died she moved to Berne with to be with her children.
That suggested to me that perhaps Peter Oberbach's first wife Elisabetha Stein d. before the 1749 bpt. of Peter Weidman; and that his sp. Peter Overbaugh and Eva were the married Peter O. and Anna Eva Becker.
If the Anna Eva Oberbach in Schoharie in 1752 is indeed Peter O.'s second wife, than it suggests he died b. 1752. Anna Eva O. pr. moved to Berne with Jacob Weidman and Elisabetha Dietz, abt 1751 or with Johannes Dietz and Maria Overbaugh when they moved to Berne after Feb. 1751. I'm now thinking that the two families moved to Berne from near Loonenburg about the same time in 1751.
Now you tell me, Lyla, tha Eliz. Stein remarried! That throws a monkey wrench in my scenario! Now it is your turn to tell me what the evidence is that she remarried, and when.
I'm enjoying the search for the truth how ever it comes out!
Many regards, Hal Miller
