Dear Gay Mathis:
You are correct about this. The following affidavit appears in the booklet "I Knew Jesse James" ( Stanton, Missouri, 1966; copyright 1967; republished, and copyright renewed, in 1997, by Francena Turilli ) by Rudy Turilli ( booklet is available from the Meramec Caverns Gift Shop in Stanton, Missouri ), on page 43:
"AFFIDAVIT OF CLARENCE N. BOUYER
State of Texas
County of Tarrant
AFFIDAVIT OF CLARENCE N. BOUYER of 419 Belknap Street, Fort Worth, Texas, of lawful age, being first duly sworn, deposes and says as follows: My father was John Marc Bouyer, born at Talbaton, Georgia , in 1844. He fought with the Confederate Army; was captured and escaped from the Union Army Prison to join Quantrells Guerrillas known as the Missouri Militia. Dad knew Cole Younger, Colonel Henry Younger, and the James boys, very well.
Prior to his death in 1919, he told me that Jesse James was NOT dead, this was a year or two prior to his death. He also told me that he had seen Jesse James in West Texas, years after he was supposed to have been killed in Missouri.
I am a veteran of both world wars, and have been studying and making pictures for years. I was born at Weatherford, Texas, in 1899, and attended public schools there. At the present, I am attending the Fort Worth School of Photography. I have met the man now known as J. Frank Dalton. Before I met him I have compared picture ( see True Mag. October, 1947 ) of Jesse James to pictures of J. Frank Dalton.
I am sincere in the belief that J. Frank Dalton and Jesse James are one and the same man. I met Jesse James ( or J. F. Dalton ) in November, 1947, at Gregg Memorial Hospital in Longview, Texas, and again at the Veteran's Hospital at Lisbon, Texas.
In my own mind I am convinced that J. Frank Dalton and Jesse James ARE ONE and THE SAME MAN.
( Signed ) C. N. Bouyer
Subscribed and sworn to before me this 20th day of May, 1948.
( Signed ) M. D. Logan
Notary Public Tarrant County, Texas
My Commission expires June 1, 1949"
John Marc Bouyer ( Aug. 3, 1845 - Sept. 2, 1919 ) served in the Confederate Army as a member of Company F, 12th Georgia Battalion ( Light Artillery ). He is buried in City Greenwood Cemetery at Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. Also buried in this cemetery is Cpl. W. R. Bouyer, who served with Company C, 4th Texas Infantry in the Spanish American War.
