...But rather some information I just could not find on my own because it looks like "Kann" on the actual census records and I had trouble finding them there in Ancestry.com even using soundex.

...From where I stand this page takes a lot of the mystery out of the James L. Courtney story and when combined with thoughts from Max and B.C. Courtney, H.C. Shelton and Theron Palmer I have a clearer view. From this I assume he waz not dead yet at least not in 1870. A year later he is in Texas and that is a good thing because he could and did write the diary.
