Strange how fate plans a role in keeping the family tree branching out or cutting it down half way through it's growth. That happened with my husbands Holmes line. His grand father down the lines Jason Greer Holmes went to the saloon to have a drink. He took his guns off at the door like everyone was suppose to. A Mr.Edwards was there but he did't put his guns by the door. Jason got upset with Mr. Edwards and threw a drink in his face. Mr. Edwards shot and killed Jason and propped him up against a tree that he knew his wife and son would see on the way to town. Jason's wife Marena Record Holmes and her son Jason saw him upon entering town. Had Jason Jr. died my husband would have never been born. That is how quickly a line can die and fade out. I get so upset when I think about the woman having to give up her maiden name. If a man has only daugther's there is no once to carry that last name forward. I wasn't born a Holmes therefore I should have been able to have my maiden name to carry on.
