Dear Dwight Traina:
I am just trying to get the facts straight about the series of events connected with this picture. This subject has become confusing because Howk didn't give all the facts in his books. In his books, Howk never mentions Brooks Craig. Moreover, in "Jesse James and the Lost Cause" ( 1961 ), on page 164, Howk says that Clarence N. Bouyer originally found the picture, whereas in "Jesse James Was One of His Names" ( 1975 ), on page 286, Howk says that a man named Yourkes originally found the picture. According to your information, it was Brooks Craig who "originally found" the picture, not Bouyer or Yourkes. The reason I want to read the magazine article on this, is to see what the article itself actually says about this subject. It appears that Howk didn't actually read this article himself, since he gives the 2 different accounts of what happened. To make matters worse, I haven't even been able to locate the magazine article !!!
In both books, Howk says the article appeared in TRUE MAGAZINE, September 1947 issue. The only magazine of that time period which was known merely by the name "True Magazine" was a magazine whose actual full title was: "True, the Man's Magazine." I obtained a copy of the September 1947 issue of this magazine, but the article about the picture wasn't in it. Then I thought, as you suggested, that the article might be in some other magazine which had the word "True" as "part" of its title, such as "True West" or "True Detective." The problem with "True West" is that the first issue wasn't published until 1953, which was about 6 years later than when Howk claimed the article had appeared.
The only reason the "time" the article appeared is important, is because Howk makes the follwing claim about the article ( in "Jesse James and the Lost Cause," page 164 ):
"It was this photograph [apparently, the picture of Jesse and Frank James and their mother was featured in the magazine article] which started a series of incidents and revelations going that since have never once stopped, not even for a good breath. From then on, things started falling in their natural places. One after another they came and started off with bits of real proof, facts, legal evidence, and so on. Jesse remained in the Gregg Memorial Hospital at Longview, Texas, for several weeks. It looked as if the rugged old warrior would surely die, but he didn't. Word got around here and there. Kinfolks came from everywhere and talked to the great old warrior at length."
Howk implies, above, that people all over the country read this magazine article about the picture and found out from the article that Jesse James was still alive. Then they located him at Gregg Memorial Hospital and started visiting him there. Howk implies that all this never would have happened unless all these people had read the magazine article. If this is actually what happened and Howk didn't just invent this story, then it is only natural for researchers to want to read the article, in order to find out exactly what was said in the article which motivated all these people to seek out Jesse ( Dalton ).
This matter of the magazine article also ties in with the matter of Dalton's pension. When Dalton applied for his pension in February 1947, he wasn't in the limelight. His pension was approved in August 1947, and he started receiving his pension payments in September 1947. At that point he still wasn't in the limelight. Then, suddenly, according to Howk this magazine article appeared ( in September 1947, coincidentally the very same month Dalton started receiving his pension payments ). Due solely to the appearance of this article, Dalton was now in the limelight, which was something he had not foreseen and was totally unexpected by him. When he fell and broke his hip the next month ( October 1947 ), he was confined for a few weeks at Gregg Memorial Hospital at Longview, Texas. The important thing to realize about this incident, is that by being confined for a few weeks at one location, Dalton's relatives and acquaintances, now motivated by what they had read in the magazine article, were able to locate him and talk with him at length, whereas otherwise they probably wouldn't have been able to locate him, since Dalton was notorious for constantly rambling about and not staying in one place very long. When he received all this attention from acquaintances while he was convalescing in the hospital, it probably changed his whole attitude about his pension. He probably thought if all these people were this interested in him and in what he had to say, that there was an excellent chance that he could generate far more money by "going public" than by simply sitting back and relying on his $100.00 per month pension. At that point, he wouldn't really care if he continued receiving the pension, as he now had other and bigger plans. If this is what Dalton really thought, it might explain why Dalton seemed to lose interest in receiving his pension almost as soon as the pension board had approved it. Therefore, presumably, Dalton never would have lost interest in receiving his pension if the magazine article hadn't been published in September 1947.
But was the magazine article actually published in September 1947, as Howk claims? Now do you understand why this matter of the magazine article is important to the Frank Dalton story? Several things "revolve" around this matter of the magazine article ( potentially, at least ), and therefore it is important to establish the true facts of the matter.
I do believe that the picture was found in a cabin near Bottomless Lakes, NM - - however, at this point the question is "who" found it there ( was it Bouyer, Yourkes, or someone else? ), and "when" did this incident actually happen? Also, in what magazine did the article in question appear, and in what issue of the magazine?
Also, I would like to know where Brooks Craig himself originally got the picture. Did Brooks originally find the picture in the cabin, take it to his second-hand shop in Roswell for a while, and then take it back to the cabin, where either Bouyer or Yourkes then subsequently "rediscovered" it? What is the whole story on how Brooks Craig came to have this picture in the first place?
Dear Dwight: Any further light you can shed on these questions will be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.
Sincerely, and Lots of Love - -
Philip K. Kromer
