It seems to me that everything re: J Frank Dalton began ca. the time this book was published. Stories by the Snow,Kilgore,Howk, and Hardcastle families were pushed down the hill starting as a snowball and it turned into avalanche. J Frank Dalton was a very important player in validating that Joe Vaughn was Frank James. Del Schrader, like many others were out to "make a buck". I mean, how many people claimed they were Jesse James? No wonder Jesse Edward suffered mental distress.
