The Hon. Mrs Elizabeth Lascelles, who died in France, 14 January, 2006,
at the age of 81, was the second wife and widow of the Hon. Gerald
David Lascelles (1924-98), second son of the 6th Earl of Harewood
(1882-1947) and of HRH The Princess (Victoria Alexandra Alice) Mary of
the United Kingdom of Gt Britain and Northern Ireland, The Princess
Royal, Countess of Harewood (1897-1965).
She was the former Elizabeth Evelyn (Liza) Collingwood, an actress,
known as Elizabeth Colvin, born at Wimbledon, 23 April, 1924, the only
daughter (with two brothers) of Brigadier Sydney Collingwood, CBE, CMG,
MC (b. 1892), late the Royal Artillery, of The Croft, Dedham, Essex, by
his 1st wife (they wed in 1915), Charlotte Annie, daughter of Colonel
James Charles Oughterson, late the 18 Royal Irish Regiment, of
Greenock.
She was an actress, and met the Queen's cousin, then married to his
first wife Angela, in the early 1960s, and had an illegitimate son,
Martin David, who was born in London, 9 February, 1962. Gerald and
Angela Lascelles did not divorce until 1978, in which year Mr Lascelles
was granted permission (under the terms of the Royal Marriages Act) to
wed Miss Collingwood. It was understood then that a descendant of the
Royal House could not marry in a civil ceremony in England or Wales, so
the couple married at Vienna, 17 November, 1978, where Gerald's cousin
Prince Michael of Kent has also recently married Baroness
Marie-Christine von Reibnitz.
Gerald Lascelles's home with his first wife had been at Fort Belvedere,
Windsor, once the favourite home of his uncle and godfather, King
Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor. With his second wife he made his
home at Sigoules, France, where he died, 27 February, 1998.
Mrs Lascelles is survived by her only child, Martin, and grandchildren,
Georgina and Alexandre.
The cremation takes place 20 January, 2006, at Notre Dame de Sanilhac
24660 Perigueux, to which all friends are invited. A Thanksgiving
Service will be arranged in London later.
