This is fascinating! Only another genealogist would be as understanding as you. Here is what I have on my greatgrandparents and grandparents. By the way I have the marriage dates and spouses names for Pierre's siblings. I don't have their birth or death dates.
Pierre was married to Lavina Richard (Richey, Richie, once she came to Michigan). Her parents were Alexander and Julienne Paquet. I know she was born in Canada in 1867. Some of her siblings include: Agnes and Jeremie. There were more but I don't have their names. The Richard family appears in the 1880 census for Schoolcraft County, Manistique, Michigan with Pierre listed as a boarder. Pierre and Lavina were married January 7, 1883 in Manistique and spent the remainder of their lives there while Julienne and Alexander returned to Canada. I know Julienne and Alexander were in Michigan in 1883 as they are named as witnesses for the marriage of Pierre and Lavina.
My grandparents were William LaBelle b. May 11, 1905 and Alice Lamkey. William was the youngest of 9 children born to Lavina and Pierre. Alice's ancestors were German and English.
I'm not sure if this matters at all but all of my LaBelle's had black hair, high cheek bones and dark complected. That might be where the Indian rumor came about. Another interesting fact is that we have heard that the LaBelle family owned Quebec at one time. I'm assuming that has something to do with Fr. Antoine LaBelle. Just another mystery.
