Some years ago I corresponded with another descendant of James and Joicy Otts. She was satisfied that James Otts was from the Spartanburg Co., SC, Otts family. He is probably the James OATS in the 1840 census of Spartanburg Dist., SC, p. 92.
Spartanburg deeds OO:100 1841, James Otts sold 146.5 acres on Wards Creek.Joicy Otts, his wife, released her dower rights.
James Otts had bought 100 acres of the 146.5 acres in 1829 from the estate of Samuel Otts.(Deeds U:225).The descendant told me she had seen a Bible record that placed James Otts as a child of Samuel Otts.Samuel Otts is a son of Martin Otts who died in Spartanburg Dist., SC, between 1810 and 1814.
