Linda,
I am a daughter of "double" Otto's - both parents were Otto's from different families in Missouri. My father's family arrived at the port of New Orleans here in the USA from Bremen Germany. We are of the information that there are 3 different Otto families here in Missouri and I represent 2 of them.I live in St.Louis County, MO and have a bit of info. Both of my gggrandparents are named Steven/StephanOtto.One from the Rich Fountain/Westphalia, MO area and the other from the St. Anthony/Iberia, MO area.If you think we could match somewhere along the line email me at [email protected] and I'll see what info I could come up with. There are members of the 3rd Otto family here in my immediate area - could possibly pass on info if you prefer.
I also had trouble trying to find arrivals at Ellis Island and then found out about New Orleans. Also, the Otto also was spelled "Otte" and "Whilmenotto (not sure this spelling is correct)" and was Americanized at the arrival port or by the Catholic Nuns teaching the children.
Good Luck.
