Oatman name change and meaning from Ottman(n)

Hello David Sadler,
I have Ottman's in the Oneida County pacifically in Vernon, NY.He was my 2nd great grandfather George J. Ottmann born in 1818 in Germany and married Eva Diez (Dietz)(born in 1836 in Berne, Switzerland)in 1858 in Rome, Oneida Co., N.Y. and they had four children:George E. 1861-1931; Charles F. 1864-1942 (my great grandfather); Mary 1869-1921; and Frank 1873-1940.On George's citizenship paper they have him down as Oatman, he came from Al Sace Lorraine, France sometime around 1853 and in later years they named a road after him but put Oatman instead of Ottman and in 1973 his grand-daughter had it changed.I also have obituary clippings of George's son, George E. where they have put his last name as Oatman in all the clippings.I do believe the correct spelling is Ottmann and later they dropped an n as I have other documents with both spellings. Before coming to Vernon, N.Y. George was in Westmorland, N.Y according to a warranty deed when he bought his property in Vernon.Does any of these names mean anything to you?I do believe that Oatman was just a mistake for the Ottman's but I was told that there were Oatman's in Oneida County.George died in 1888 and Eva died in 1916 both in Vernon, N.Y at their home on Tilden Hill.Hope to hear from you and any other Ottmann members.
