Samuel Otterson was the son of James and Rebecca (?). James Otterson is said to have come from Pennsylvania (Lancaster Co?) to Virginia. A deed shows he was there for a short time before coming to Berkley Dist., (later Union Co., SC.), a very early settler on the Broad and Tyger Rivers. Samuel Otterson was born there, served in the American Revolution, ultimately as a major in the SC Militia. His Rev. war Pension Application has nine pages listing his service record. Samuel and Ruth (Gordon) Otterson lived in Union County until about 1821 when he moved (with a large, extended family) to Greene Co., Alabama. He died there in 1837. His daughter, Mathana, married Benjamin Warren Johnson of Lunenburg Co., VA - my ancestors. There is apparenlty no connection between Benjamin W. and John Johnston, Esq., Samuel Otterson's brother-in-law, who was hanged by the Tories about 1782. I have come to believe that the Otterson name is a phonetic spelled as a clerk heard it - O'Hearon was menitioned in some Newberry County, SC, literature. I have a great deal of information about this family if you care to pursue it.
