DNA tests for Ott
Hello all --
Like last year, Family Tree DNA has an end-of-year sale that should interest anyone who has been considering a DNA test. The two tests that would help our Ott project are the Y-DNA 67-marker test (discounted to $189) and the Y-DNA 37-marker test (discounted to $119).These tests are appropriate for a male with the Ott surname because the Y-chromosome, like the surname, is inherited through the father. In theory, all male Otts should have the same or very similar Y-chromosome test results.Just how similar is what interests us, as it tells us how close the various Ott branches are.
The sale runs until next Tuesday night (New Year's Eve).To order a Y-chromosome test (with discount) and add it to our Ott project, go here:

(Note:The OTT name is, at least for now, included under the OTTS name.)
The more Ott males we can get to take these tests, the more accurate our picture will be of the whole Ott family tree, and how its branches interconnect.Family Tree DNA also has other kinds of tests (and bundles of tests) on sale, which may interest you for other reasons, but they are unlikely to provide useful information for the Ott project. There is also a Y-DNA 111-marker test, but even on sale it's a bit pricey at $289.Until a good number of users start taking that test, which hasn't happened yet, 111 markers will not tell us anything more than 67 markers will.So I'd recommend sticking with the 67 or 37 marker tests.(Fewer than 37 markers is, in my opinion, a waste of money.)
If anyone has questions on the value of these tests, or about what we might expect to learn from them, feel free to ask here or to E-mail me privately at tmarkjames at yahoo dot com.
