My great grandfather, Sidney Johnston Otey, born in Richmond, Va., 1880. Son of Edward Thomas Otey, b. Henrico Co., Va. 1839 and Mary Frances Johnston. Edward Thomas, son of John W. Otey, b. Charles City Co., Va, 1805. Sidney Otey was married to Annie Garret. Issue: David Otey and Anne Otey.

Mexican pianist and composer Orlando Otey, great grandson of Van Rensselaer Otey, who was an American soldier in Mexico (1840's or 50's), and decided to stay. Maestro Otey says he was told the original name of the Oteys from West Yorkshire, England, was Oteyza, a Basque name. This is not the first time I have seen a Spanish/Basque connection. Orlando Otey has been living many years in the USA.

Anyone have any information about this Spanish/Basque origin of the Otey name?

Thanks,
Gary Carson
Aguascalientes, Mexico
