Amy, Glad to hear from you-
The New Mexico Otero's are a sub-set of the World-Wide Otero's. The name OTERO with many variations come from the name of "height, hill, tower on a hill". Our Otero branch comes from the Galicia area of northern Spain. His name was Cayetano Otero (b. 1703) who came to New Mexico through Puebla, Mexico. He was a Franciscan Priest who had an affair with a woman by the name of Quiteria Duran y Chavez. They had several children together and the New Mexico Otero's were the result. Otero's from Spain in the 1600 and 1700's came to Mexico, Colombia S.A. and Purto Rico. We are spread all around the new world. My Y-DNA came out as R1b1b2 which is Celtic from northern Spain.
If you could send me your father's line if you have it with his father and his father etc. and possible dates and places of residence and/or origins and I will do some research. Here in New Mexico we have some very good geneological libraries for the Southwest.
Adios! mi prima, denis
