My great great grandfather is Alson P Ostrander born 1849 Hope Hamilton Co NY. I'm able to trace his father, William L (1826) and his brother Robert G (1823+/-)of Hope and Wells, NY. I'm trying to deduce based on the 1840 census if their father was James Ostrander in Hope which i assume based on location and from there more descendants.

father: William L Ostrander 1826
mother: Mariah L. Ostrander 1824
married: Delphine C Bass
children: William B., Laura Charles, Ellen, and Jennie.
I'm not sure where else to look since my family lived either in Hope, Wells, Lake Pleasant, Gloversville, and Herkimer! How can I trace back to the original family? thanks
